Cube Folding

Fold the flat net into a cube in your head.

Loading exercise...

Cube folding is a core spatial-visualisation task in pilot selection. A flat net of six labelled faces folds into a cube. Picture the fold and work out which face ends up opposite the marked one.

About this test

What this test measures

This measures spatial visualisation and mental folding: folding a flat net into a cube and tracking which faces meet. It is a focused test of manipulating a shape in your mind.

How to improve your score

  • Fix one face as the base, then fold the others up around it in sequence.
  • Track which edges join, opposite faces on the net never end up adjacent.
  • Use the relationship between opposite faces to eliminate wrong options.

Good to know

  • Walk faces from a base

Fix one face as the base and track where each connected face folds to. Faces two steps apart along a straight strip of the net usually end up opposite each other.
  • Three opposite pairs

A cube has three pairs of opposite faces, and any two faces that share an edge in the net can never be opposite. Ruling out the neighbours of the queried face often leaves the answer.

Frequently asked questions

How do opposite faces work on a cube?

A cube has three pairs of opposite faces. Faces next to each other in a row of the net often wrap around to sit opposite, which is what makes the task tricky.

Any strategy?

Pick one face as the base, then track where each connected face folds up to. Faces two steps apart along a straight strip usually end up opposite.

Why do pilots need this?

Spatial visualisation underlies reading instruments, charts and three-dimensional position, and it is one of the most predictive spatial skills in selection.
