What this test measures

This measures perceptual focus and field independence: picking a known shape out of a busy pattern that disguises it. It rewards holding a target form steady against visual clutter.

How to improve your score

Keep the target shape clearly in mind and overlay it mentally on the figure.
Trace edges and ignore lines that do not belong to your shape.
Check orientation, the hidden figure is usually the same size and angle as shown.

Hold the outline, trace the lines

Memorise the target's shape and orientation, then trace its exact lines inside each busy figure. The target appears at the same size and angle, never rotated or resized.

Exactly one contains it

Only one figure holds the complete target; the others are missing at least one line. Field independence, the knack of pulling a shape out of a cluttered background, is exactly what this trains.

What makes this hard?

Extra lines cross and overlap the target, so it does not stand out. You have to hold the shape in mind and pick out its lines from the clutter.

How many figures contain the target?

Exactly one. The others are missing at least one of the target's lines, even though they look just as busy.

What does it measure?

Field independence, the ability to separate a relevant detail from a distracting background, which supports a focused instrument scan.
