Block Counting

Count the cubes, including the hidden ones.

Loading exercise...

Block counting tests three-dimensional visualisation. A stack of cubes is shown in an isometric view, with some cubes hidden behind others. Work out the total number of cubes in the stack.

About this test

What this test measures

This measures three-dimensional visualisation and counting: working out how many blocks a stack contains, including the ones you cannot see. It tests building and holding a solid mental model.

How to improve your score

  • Count layer by layer, then add, rather than trying to count the whole pile at once.
  • Account for hidden blocks that must be there to support the ones you can see.
  • Cross-check by counting a different way, by column instead of by layer.

Good to know

  • Count columns, not faces

Add up each column from the base, including cubes hidden behind others, rather than counting visible top faces. A cube with others stacked on it must exist even when you cannot see it.
  • Hidden cubes are the catch

The usual error is counting only what is visible, which always comes out too low. Build the stack column by column so the supporting cubes underneath are never missed.

Frequently asked questions

How can I count cubes I cannot see?

Each column is solid from the base up, so a cube with others stacked on it must exist even if it is hidden. Add the height of every column.

What is the common mistake?

Counting only the visible top faces. That misses the supporting cubes underneath and behind, so the total comes out too low.

Why test this?

It measures the ability to build and reason about a three-dimensional shape in your mind, a key spatial skill for pilots.
