Free ATC trainer, no sign-up

The ATC communications simulator that marks your readback.

You make the first call yourself. Then a controller clears you, you set the heading, level, squawk and frequency in the cockpit, and read it back. Every mandatory item is marked against ICAO phraseology, with the model call beside your own.

New to radio work? Open the Easy group below and pick the first scenario. On your first run, slow the radio down with the speed selector and tap Show the words; hide them and speed back up as the call structure clicks.

This simulator is a training aid for learning standard radio phraseology. It is not connected to any live air traffic service and must never be used for real-world communications, flight planning or navigation. Always train with a qualified instructor and treat official publications and your ATO as authoritative.

Marked item by item, not pass or fail

A readback is right or wrong one element at a time, and that is how an examiner listens to it. These are the 13 item types the debrief scores, with the model call shown beside your own and a note on anything phrased non-standard.

  • Heading readbacks
  • Altitude readbacks
  • Flight level readbacks
  • Speed readbacks
  • Squawk codes
  • Frequency changes
  • QNH / altimeter settings
  • Direct-to clearances
  • Procedure clearances
  • Runway readbacks
  • Runway crossings
  • Taxi routes
  • Level restrictions

Checked on every readback

Every readback must end with your callsign.

How a scenario works

The loop you fly, and what the debrief gives you back.

Call, listen, read back

Every flight opens with your own call to Clearance Delivery, with the three things it has to carry named beside the box. After that the controller issues the clearances: set what changed on the PFD and key the push-to-talk, write or dictate the call in full, or do both at once like a real pilot.

A real glass cockpit

A canvas-drawn PFD with attitude, airspeed and altitude tapes, an HSI compass, a COM and transponder radio stack, and a geographic enroute map that places your departure airport among the real airports around it.

Graded like an exam

Per-item scoring on every mandatory readback, with notes on what you missed and where the phraseology was non-standard. It is the same readback discipline the EASA ATPL 091 VFR Communications and 092 IFR Communications exams test.

Every scenario, by difficulty

100 flights
Each one is a scripted IFR flight from a real departure airport.

Every scenario runs from clearance delivery and taxi through take-off, climb and the enroute phase. Pick any of them in the simulator above; your best score per scenario is saved in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Exams, scoring, speaking out loud, and what it costs.
Does this help with the EASA ATPL VFR and IFR Communications exams?
It is built as practice support for them. EASA ATPL subjects 091 VFR Communications and 092 IFR Communications test standard radiotelephony: the structure of calls, which items of a clearance must be read back, and the standard words and numbers. Every scenario here drills exactly that loop of listening to a controller and reading the clearance back in ICAO phraseology. It is a practice aid, not a complete syllabus course, so use it alongside your ATO's 091 and 092 material.
What is the ATC communications simulator?
It is a free, browser-based radio communications trainer. You fly scripted ATC scenarios from a glass cockpit: listen to the controller, set your heading, altitude, squawk and frequency on the PFD, then key the transmit button to read the clearance back. Each readback is graded against ICAO phraseology.
How is my readback scored?
Every transmission is classified into the mandatory items a pilot must read back, and you earn credit per item rather than passing or failing the whole call. The debrief names what you missed, flags any non-standard phrasing, and shows the ICAO model readback alongside your own. The 13 item types it scores are Heading readbacks, Altitude readbacks, Flight level readbacks, Speed readbacks, Squawk codes, Frequency changes, QNH / altimeter settings, Direct-to clearances, Procedure clearances, Runway readbacks, Runway crossings, Taxi routes, Level restrictions.
Do I need to speak out loud?
You choose, and the first-run intro lets you pick. There are three practice styles: Instruments (dial the clearance into the cockpit by tapping the PFD and radio stack, then press push-to-talk), Type or speak (write the call out in full, or dictate it with your browser's built-in speech recognition, available in Chrome, Safari and Samsung Internet), and Both (set the instruments and say the call, like a real flight deck). Typed and spoken calls are graded word by word against ICAO phraseology, including non-standard phrasing.
Is it free?
Yes. All 100 scenarios are free to fly with no sign-up. It is a study aid, not a substitute for training with a flight instructor or for real-world radio operation.

The radio is one subject of fourteen

091 and 092 are two papers on a fourteen-subject syllabus, and the rest is examined the same way: recall under time pressure. The SkyStudy ATPL question bank turns the whole ATPL theory syllabus into exam-style question practice with spaced repetition and timed mock exams. Free to start, no card needed.
