Spoiler

A spoiler is an upper-wing panel that rises into the airflow to reduce lift and increase drag.

Where it is
On the upper surface of each wing, ahead of the trailing edge in the generic transport-aircraft model.
What it does
Depending on the aircraft and operating mode, spoilers can assist roll, increase descent drag, or dump lift after landing.
Relationship
Asymmetric deployment can assist roll, while symmetric deployment can act as a speed brake or lift dumper.
Common confusion
A spoiler does not increase lift like a flap. It deliberately disrupts airflow and reduces lift over that part of the wing.
