Guided journey

Core airflow: intake to exhaust

Follow the working fluid through the generic two-spool turbofan before tracing the shafts that return turbine work to the compressors and fan.

Step 1 of 8Intake

The intake presents the incoming air to the fan.

Low-pressure turbine

The low-pressure turbine extracts work from the core gas stream to power the low-pressure shaft, fan and booster.

Where it is
Downstream of the high-pressure turbine and upstream of the exhaust in the core.
What it does
It supplies the mechanical work required by the low-pressure spool.
Relationship
Its torque travels forward through the low-pressure shaft to the fan and low-pressure compressor.
Common confusion
A turbine extracts work from gas. It does not directly push the aircraft forward through its shaft.

Check yourself

Without looking back, can you explain where the low-pressure turbine is, what it does, and which component drives it or is driven by it?

Scope: Generic two-spool high-bypass turbofan teaching model. Reviewed 2026-09-09.
