Mental Rotation
Same shape, or its mirror image?
Loading 3D exercise...
Two three-dimensional figures are shown at different angles. Decide whether they are the same shape rotated, or mirror images. A core spatial-ability task in pilot selection.

What this test measures
This measures three-dimensional spatial visualisation: turning an object in your mind to see whether two views match. It underpins reading instruments, models and charts that show the world from a shifted viewpoint.
How to improve your score
- Rotate one clear feature of the object first, then check the rest follows it.
- Practise distinguishing a true rotation from a mirror image, that is the common trap.
- Build the habit of turning objects in your head from everyday scenes.

Track one distinctive arm
Pick one stand-out feature of the shape and follow where it points after the rotation. If that feature can line up, the figures match; if it never can, they are mirror images.Mental rotation and flying performance
Mental rotation is one of the most studied spatial skills and links closely to flying performance. It improves with practice, so steady repetition lifts both your speed and your accuracy.
