PPL Air Law: the exam guide
PPL Air Law is the rulebook subject: it introduces the Chicago Convention, the ICAO Annexes that grew out of it, and the day-to-day rules that keep aircraft separated and airspace organised. Most students meet it early in their theory phase, and that timing is deliberate, because the definitions and structures it teaches (state sovereignty over airspace, the licensing framework, the classification of airspace, the rules of the air) reappear constantly in every other PPL subject. It is not a subject you can reason your way through; it rewards accurate, repeated recall of specific facts, categories, and thresholds.

Every privilege you hold as a pilot in command, and every service you receive from air traffic control, traces back to a rule you meet in this subject. Getting VMC minima wrong, misreading a licence privilege, or confusing an ICAO baseline with a national implementation is not a theoretical slip. - Turn every numeric threshold, from visibility minima to licence validity periods, into a flashcard and drill it until recall is instant, not reasoned out.
- Build a single reference table of VMC minima by airspace class and altitude band; most Air Law mistakes trace back to mixing up rows in that table.
- Read each rule alongside a real scenario: instead of memorising a right-of-way rule in isolation, picture two aircraft converging and ask which one gives way and why.
- Revise ICAO baseline concepts separately from national or local implementation details, because the exam frequently tests whether you know which is which.
- Use short, frequent sessions rather than long weekend blocks. Air Law is recall-heavy, and recall decays fastest of any study type, so spacing beats cramming.
- Practise reading AIP-style and NOTAM-style text for structure and meaning rather than memorising the format, since questions often test comprehension over recitation.
Common traps
- Mixing up VMC minima for different airspace classes and altitude bands, especially the boundary at 3,000 ft AMSL.
- Confusing the ICAO baseline rule with a national aviation authority's local implementation of it.
- Answering right-of-way questions from instinct rather than the specific hierarchy the rules set out.
- Losing track of exactly which licence privileges a PPL(A) does and does not confer, particularly around carrying passengers and night flying.
- Treating NOTAM, AIP, and AIC as interchangeable terms when each has a distinct role and update cycle.
- Forgetting that altimeter setting procedures change with altitude and region, and answering from a single memorised case.

An aeroplane is flying at 2,500 ft AMSL in Class G airspace at 110 kt IAS, below 3,000 ft AMSL. What are the basic VMC minima that apply?
- A8 km flight visibility and 1,500 m horizontal, 300 m (1,000 ft) vertical distance from cloud
- B1,500 m flight visibility, clear of cloud, and in sight of the surface
- C5 km flight visibility and remaining clear of cloud with the surface in sight at all times
- DNo minimum visibility applies below 3,000 ft AMSL in Class G airspace
