PPL Air Law: the exam guide

PPL Air Law is the rulebook subject: it introduces the Chicago Convention, the ICAO Annexes that grew out of it, and the day-to-day rules that keep aircraft separated and airspace organised. Most students meet it early in their theory phase, and that timing is deliberate, because the definitions and structures it teaches (state sovereignty over airspace, the licensing framework, the classification of airspace, the rules of the air) reappear constantly in every other PPL subject. It is not a subject you can reason your way through; it rewards accurate, repeated recall of specific facts, categories, and thresholds.

An aeroplane is flying at 2,500 ft AMSL in Class G airspace at 110 kt IAS, below 3,000 ft AMSL. What are the basic VMC minima that apply?

  • A8 km flight visibility and 1,500 m horizontal, 300 m (1,000 ft) vertical distance from cloud
  • B1,500 m flight visibility, clear of cloud, and in sight of the surface
  • C5 km flight visibility and remaining clear of cloud with the surface in sight at all times

Is PPL Air Law mostly memorisation?

Largely, yes. Air Law is built on defined thresholds, categories, and privileges that do not follow from first principles, so there is no way to reason your way to the right visibility minimum or licence validity period. What helps is attaching each fact to an operational picture: instead of memorising a number in isolation, picture the flight it applies to. Students who do this retain the material far longer than those who try to memorise a flat list.

How many questions are on the PPL Air Law paper?
