This measures sustained lateral motor control and anticipation: steering a constant-speed aircraft through the centre of each gate as the gaps progressively narrow. With no way to slow down, it rewards the smooth, early corrections that hand-flying a precise track demands.

How to improve your score

  • Aim for the centre line the moment the next gate appears rather than correcting at the last second; small early inputs beat large late ones.
  • Hold a relaxed, steady input instead of jerking the controls, since over-correcting on one gate throws you off line for the next.
  • Chase every gate, even the narrow late ones, because a missed gate is scored as a full miss and drags your precision average down.

    At constant speed there is no way to slow down for a tight gate. Aim for the centre line as soon as the next gate appears on screen rather than correcting at the last moment. Small anticipatory corrections beat large reactive ones.
  • How the scoring penalises skipping narrow gates

    Every missed gate is treated as a full pole-edge crossing (100% deviation) when computing the mean. Clearing 15 gates at perfect centre while skipping the 5 narrow end-gates scores lower than you might expect, so chasing every gate is always worth it.
  • Real tests use dedicated hardware

    On-site selection systems run tasks like this on calibrated joysticks, rudder pedals and custom response panels that no browser exercise can replicate, so treat this as training for the underlying control skill rather than a replica of any machine. One practical tip from candidates who have sat the real assessments: practise with a mouse or a gamepad, not a laptop trackpad. A trackpad makes smooth, continuous two-axis control far harder than the real test ever would.

Frequently asked questions

How is the score calculated?

Score = clearance rate x precision score x 100. Clearance rate is how many gates you flew through (not just grazed) divided by the total. Precision score is 1 minus the average normalised deviation across all gates, where a miss counts as a full-width deviation, so skipping the narrow late gates cannot inflate your score.

What does the deviation bar in the corner show?

The bar fills from the left after each gate: green means you were near the centre line, amber means you were close to a pole, and red means you missed. It resets on the next gate crossing.

Why does the gap narrow during the run?

Pilot assessments that use this format deliberately narrow the gates to stress-test whether candidates can maintain fine lateral control as the margin for error shrinks. The Easy setting uses 20 gates and the Hard setting uses 30.
