Running memory span tests the constant updating of working memory. A stream of digits plays at a steady pace, and you never know when it will stop; when it does, type back the last few in order.

This measures working memory updating and recall: keeping a moving window of recent items as new ones keep coming. The challenge is letting go of old information at the right moment without losing the current set.
As each new digit arrives, shift your mental window forward: drop the oldest item, add the newest, and subvocalise the updated set straight away. Trying to hold the full stream from the beginning is the wrong approach. Only the last two, three or four items matter, and keeping that window fresh on every beat is the whole skill.
The exercise starts at a recall span of three and extends by one digit per level. Reaching a span of five or more reliably is a strong target. The skill transfers directly: every time a controller revises an altitude or a heading partway through a transmission, you must drop the old value and slot in the new one without losing the rest of the message.
