How this calculator works

The tool splits ownership into the two families every experienced owner budgets separately. Variable costs are the ones each flying hour creates: fuel, oil, an engine overhaul reserve, a propeller or rotor reserve, and a reserve for unscheduled maintenance. Fixed costs arrive whether the aircraft flies or not: hangarage, insurance, the annual inspection, financing, subscriptions, fees, and optionally crew and depreciation.

Total annual cost is fixed plus variable, and cost per flight hour is that total divided by your annual hours. This is why flying more makes each hour cheaper: the fixed block spreads over more hours. It is also why a rarely flown aircraft is the most expensive kind per hour.

Every preset value is an indicative mid-2020s figure chosen to be defensible, not authoritative. The point of the tool is the structure; the accuracy comes when you replace the defaults with your own quotes.

What an engine reserve is and why it matters

Turbine and piston engines run to a time between overhauls (TBO). When it arrives, the overhaul bill can be a large fraction of the aircraft's value. Smart owners divide that future bill by the TBO hours and set that amount aside every flying hour, so the overhaul is already paid for when it comes due.

The calculator builds this reserve for you from the overhaul cost and TBO fields, and does the same for the propeller or rotor system. If you buy an aircraft with a mid-time engine, the market already prices that in, but your reserve account should start from the hours actually consumed.

Reading the fixed vs variable split

A high fixed share means the aircraft punishes low utilisation: at 50 hours a year, hangarage and insurance dominate and the hourly cost can be shocking. A high variable share means the cost scales with flying, which is more forgiving if your hours vary from year to year.

If the fixed share of your result is much above two thirds at your realistic hours, it is worth pricing the alternatives: renting, a syndicate share, or block charter. The comparison mode exists exactly for that conversation.

How much does it cost to own a small aircraft per year?

For a typical piston single flown about 100 hours a year in Europe, realistic all-in budgets commonly land between EUR 20,000 and EUR 40,000 per year once fuel, hangarage, insurance, the annual inspection, maintenance reserves and subscriptions are counted honestly. The calculator on this page lets you build the figure from your own numbers; every default is indicative and editable.

What is the biggest cost aircraft buyers underestimate?

Maintenance reserves. The purchase price is visible, but the engine overhaul that arrives at TBO, propeller overhauls and unscheduled repairs are not on any invoice until they suddenly are. Budgeting a per-hour reserve for them, the way this calculator does, is what separates a planned overhaul from a financial emergency.

How is cost per flight hour calculated?

Total annual cost (fixed costs plus variable costs) divided by annual flight hours. Fixed costs like hangarage and insurance arrive regardless of flying, so the more hours you fly, the cheaper each hour becomes. Flying 50 hours instead of 100 roughly doubles the fixed component of every hour.

Are the fuel prices and hangar costs in this tool accurate?

They are indicative mid-2020s planning defaults by region, not live market data, and they are clearly labelled as such. Fuel prices swing with the oil market and airfield, and hangarage varies enormously between a farm strip and a capital-city airport. Replace the defaults with your local prices for a meaningful result.

Is shared ownership cheaper than owning outright?

Per hour flown, usually yes. A syndicate splits the fixed costs (hangar, insurance, annual inspection) across the group while each member pays the variable costs for their own hours. If your realistic utilisation is under roughly 75 to 100 hours a year, a share is often the more rational route to the same flying.
